About the Games - Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Introduction of “Road to Rio” logo
The “Road to Rio - Support Hong Kong Athletes” logo is
designed by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of
Hong Kong, China to promote the coming Rio 2016 Olympic
Games and to rally support for Hong Kong Athletes who
strive to secure qualification for the Rio Olympic Games.
The word “Rio” in the logo represents a ribbon-like road that
runs from left to right, signifying freedom, joy and carnival. It
is written in yellow and green to feature the main colours of
the national emblem of Brazil, the host of the 2016 Olympic
Games. Placed before “Rio”, the words “Road to” are
presented in red, the colour of Hong Kong’s regional
emblem, to suggest that our athletes start their journey to
the Rio Olympics from home. The appeal for public support
is spelt out in eye-catching red with the message “Support
Hong Kong Athletes”.

The Emblem
The emblem for Rio 2016 Olympic Games conveys passion and transformation - the passion of
all Cariocas and Brazilians for sport and celebration. The emblem is based on four pillars:
contagious energy, harmonious diversity, exuberant nature and Olympic spirit.
The Torch
The innovative design, which is inspired by the warmth of
the Brazilian people, features moveable segments that
expand vertically to reveal the colours of Brazil when the
Olympic flame is passed from one torchbearer to another.
The triangular shape of the torch, meanwhile, alludes to the
three Olympic Values of excellence, friendship and respect,
while the floating effect of its different segments represents
the efforts of the athletes. Each torch, crafted from recycled
aluminium and resin with a satin finish, weighs between 1kg
and 1.5kg and stands 63.5cm high when contracted and
69cm when expanded. These will be carried by approximately
12,000 torchbearers during the Rio 2016 Olympic
Torch Relay visiting around 300 cities and towns across
Brazil.
The Mascot
The Rio 2016 mascot is called Vinicius as a tribute to poet
Vinicius de Moraes. He is a mixture of all Brazilian animals.
He is happy and communicative, with a strong, self-confident
personality. His mission is to infect the world with happiness
and to celebrate friendship through sports.
